Painting the exterior of your home is one of the most cost-effective ways to boost curb appeal, protect your investment, and increase property value. But here in Iowa - where seasons range from subzero winters to humid summer days - timing your exterior paint project is just as important as choosing the right color.

At True Blue Painting, Des Moines’ trusted local painting professionals, we help homeowners plan their projects around Iowa’s unpredictable Midwest weather. If you’ve been wondering when the best time to paint your home’s exterior is, here’s our seasonal guide - and why now might be the perfect window to get on the schedule.

Spring: The Kickoff Season (April–May)

Spring is when many homeowners begin to notice peeling paint, cracked siding, and faded trim. The snow has melted, the sun returns, and it’s finally easy to assess your home’s exterior condition.

Pros:

  • Mild temperatures (ideal range is 50–85°F)

  • Lower humidity in early spring

  • Easier scheduling before the summer rush

Cons:

  • Unpredictable rain

  • Cooler mornings can delay start times

True Blue Tip: Spring is when our schedule begins to fill quickly. If you’re planning a spring project, we recommend reaching out by March to secure your spot on our calendar.

Summer: Peak Painting Season (June–August)

Summer offers long, dry days - great for productivity and consistent drying. However, higher humidity and heat waves can create challenges for both paint adhesion and painter comfort.

Pros:

  • Consistent warm temperatures

  • Faster drying times

  • Ideal for larger or multi-day projects

Cons:

  • Higher humidity in late summer

  • Afternoon thunderstorms

  • Schedules book weeks in advance

Booking Alert: By early June, we’re often booked several weeks out. If you want your home painted in July or August, contact True Blue in late spring to reserve your slot.

Fall: The Underrated Favorite (September–October)

Fall may be Iowa’s best-kept secret for exterior painting. Cooler temperatures and lower humidity allow paint to adhere and cure beautifully. Plus, painting in fall protects your home before winter arrives.

Pros:

  • Stable, mild weather

  • Ideal conditions for curing paint

  • Less competition for dates (though popularity is growing)

Cons:

  • Shorter daylight hours

  • Must finish before the first frost (typically late October)

True Blue Tip: If you missed the summer window, don’t wait too long into fall. Once temperatures consistently drop below 45°F, we pause exterior painting for the season.

Winter: Not Ideal (November–March)

Iowa winters are simply too cold and unpredictable for exterior painting. Paint won’t cure properly, and surfaces may be damp, frozen, or unsafe to work on.

That said, winter is the perfect time to plan. Many of our clients meet with us between December and February to:

  • Choose colors

  • Review estimates

  • Lock in early spring scheduling before the calendar fills up

Planning ahead ensures your project is first in line when warmer weather returns.

So, When Should You Book?

If you’re hoping to paint your home’s exterior this year, the best time to book is:

  • Early spring for late spring or early summer projects

  • Mid-summer for fall projects

  • Late fall or winter to reserve early spring availability

At True Blue Painting, we operate on a first-come, first-scheduled basis - and our exterior calendar fills quickly between May and October. Even if you’re still in the planning phase, reaching out early gives you the best chance to secure your preferred timeline.
